Our mission: Vibrant neighborhood gathering spaces

SlowStreets advocates for people-first public spaces by supporting car-free streets, safe walking environments, and vibrant community life. We work with residents, businesses, and local governments to reclaim streets for people through events and education.

We envision cities where streets are safe, social, and sustainable — places where people walk, gather, and connect freely without the dominance of cars.

How?

Many of Chicago’s neighborhoods hold several street fests every year, in which not just vendors from the community but also from outside the city are invited to set up a tent and sell food, alcohol and other goods.

We leverage that system to remove vehicle traffic from the street, provide local businesses the opportunity for more space, and create a vibrant pedestrian zone.

The process is expensive, and we are subject to the same permit process as all the major street fests. Here’s how we’re different:

  • There is no donation pressure on entrance, just a couple staff members at tables to discuss the mission and request donations. We want the events to be as welcoming as possible.

  • No outside vendors. This is for the local neighborhood businesses only.

Core Values

  1. Equity
We believe every neighborhood deserves safe, walkable streets regardless of income, race, or ability.

  2. Community
We center local voices and create shared spaces that build trust and connection.

  3. Sustainability
We support urban design that prioritizes environmental health and long-term livability.

  4. Courage
We challenge the status quo to create bold, people-centered change.

  5. Joy
We celebrate the possibilities of public space through art, music, and community events.
